how-to-make-your-own-hammockWho doesn’t love spending time outdoors? And what better way to enjoy nature’s surroundings than from a hammock? Whether you’re reading a book, catching some rays or relaxing in the shade, a hammock is the ultimate way to enjoy Mother Nature’s gifts. Save money and have some fun this summer by making your own custom hammock with these simple instructions.

  • 5 yards of sturdy cotton fabric, cut into 2 1/2 yard sections (finished hammock roughly 7-feet in length)
  • 5+ yards of paracord
  • Thread

  • Sewing pins
  • Fabric scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • 2 large carabiner locks
  • 2 screw-in eyelets

Step 1: Layer the two fabrics on top of each other with the printed sides together (facing in). Use sewing pins to pin both sides (lengthwise) together to create a hemline. Make sure the pins are positioned perpendicular to the hemline, so they don’t interfere with your sewing machine needle. Use your machine to sew the two pinned sections of fabric together. Flip the fabric inside out through one of the openings on the end so the printed sides now face out.

Step 2: Take one of the open ends and fold both fabrics over in the same direction and measure 3 1/2 inches. Pin the fold down and sew 2 inches from the fold crease. Sew over this line several times with different stitch patterns to make sure it’s secure enough to break loose. Then sew another line a 1/2 inch from the other side of the fold to seal the folded flap. Repeat for the other open end.

Step 3: Measure and cut the paracord into six strands, each 8-feet in length. String the cords through the folded flap of the end you just finished sewing. Bunch the fabric and tie both ends of your paracord strips into a sturdy knot. Repeat for the other open end.

Step 4: Place the screw-in eyelets into separate sturdy surfaces (wooden posts, trees, etc.) and attach a carabiner lock to each. Then hook the strongest part of the paracord knot to each carabiner lock to finish hanging your hammock.

Voila! Your custom hammock is complete and ready for your enjoyment. Let the relaxation commence!
