With the housing market heating up this summer you may find yourself moving into a new home. For many this is a daunting task but it doesn’t have to be if you remain calm and stay organized. Here are a few tips on how to better prepare so your transition will go smoothly.

First things first, you have to decide if you will be using a moving service or if you plan to do it on your own. If you are using a service, get a few quotes ahead of time so you know you’re getting the best deal. If you are going at it alone, contact your friends and family for help or to borrow vehicles to move large furniture.

Plan ahead before you begin packing your belonging into boxes. Go through your house and identify things you can throw away or donate. When you are moving you have more incentive to throw away unused items in order to lessen the load. Once you have purged your house you can begin packing up things you don’t use often such as your winter items, holiday decorations, etc. Make sure to label your boxes by room and contents. Sometimes it can be helpful to take pictures of your rooms before you begin packing so you have a reference of where everything goes.

More helpful planning tips:

  • Take pictures of how your electronics are plugged in so you can set up your television and theater system without any hassles.
  • Keep track of small parts when disassembling furniture.
  • Make sure to label everything as this will help a lot when unpacking.
  • On your last few nights plan your meals around what you have left in the refrigerator and pantry so you are not wasting food.
  • Call ahead before you move to set up your cable and utilities.
  • Complete a change of address through the postal service.
  • Send out a moving announcement so your friends and family will have your new address.
