5 home maintenance tasks for spring
Spring is here! While the longer days, warmer air and budding plant life may be invigorating for you, your home may be in need of a post-winter fixup for the season ahead. While you’re getting reacquainted with the outdoors, set some time aside to inspect the exterior of your home and make any necessary repairs. Here’s a simple checklist to help target the areas of your residence that may be in need of maintenance.
Repair the roof
Especially if you live in a region with harsh winters, checking your roof for damage is an important step as the spring rains arrive. Examine the shingles on your roof to see if any are lost or damaged. Check for ones that are buckled, cracked, loose or missing granules and replace any you find. Also inspect the flashing around vents, skylights and chimneys and have these repaired by a qualified roofer if necessary.
Dredge out the drainage
Clogged, loose or leaky gutters and drainpipes can be bad news when spring storms blow in. Check yours to make sure they are clear and secure. Ensure that downspouts direct water well away from your home’s foundation to keep moisture from seeping into your home.
Check the chimney
Spring is also the ideal time for chimney maintenance. Inspect the outside of your chimney for any damage, and have the flue cleaned and inspected by a qualified chimney cleaner. Neglecting chimney cleaning can result in a dangerous chimney fire the next time you use your fireplace.
Test the trim
Another possible source of springtime leaks is loose trim around the windows, doors, railings and decks. Test these areas using a screwdriver to make sure that everything is secure. Rain can cause damage to exposed wood, so make any necessary repairs as needed.
Fix up the faucets
If your winter temperatures drop below freezing, you’ll need to inspect your exterior faucets for freeze damage. Turn on the water and cover the faucet opening with a finger. If the water flow can be plugged, it is a probable indicator the piping is damaged and needs to be replaced.
With this home check-up complete, you’ll have more peace of mind to enjoy the return of spring.
